The African-American Baptist Mission Collaboration has donated $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity International to help rebuild homes in Haiti destroyed in the January earthquake.
The Mission Collaboration, which represents more than 10 million Christians in the U.S., was formed in January by five Baptist groups to provide help for Haiti.
"We do this for Jesus and we do this for those who suffer in Haiti," Stephen John Thurston, president of the National Baptist Convention of America, said in a news release issued jointly by Habitat and the Mission Collaboration.
The donation will be used to provide shelter for 630 families in the town of Carbaret, Haiti, said Mike Carscaddon, executive vice president of Habitat, which has its administrative headquarters in Atlanta and its operational headquarters in Americus, Ga.
