A Roswell-based Japanese subsidiary has landed a contract to supply batteries for an unmanned spacecraft that will deliver cargo to the International Space Station.
GS Yuasa Lithium Power will provide batteries that will power Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Cygnus spacecraft. Orbital has a contract with NASA for eight missions from 2011 to 2015, transporting 20 tons of cargo to the space station. The missions will launch from Wallaps Island, Va.
The Cygnus is a solar-powered craft. The GS Yuasa batteries will power the Cygnus when it is shaded by the Earth. The batteries willl recharge when the spacecraft is facing the sun, according to a company news release.
GS Yuasa Lithium Power is a subsidiary of GS Yuasa Corp., headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, and formed in 2004 with the merger of Japan Storage Battery and Yuasa Corp.
