The Atlanta office of the transportation consulting agency Cambridge Systematics Inc. has been chosen to help create Georgia’s first statewide freight and logistics plan.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based firm was asked on Feb. 4 to lead the collaborative effort of Georgia’s transportation department and the Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics in Savannah to form a plan for dealing with the state’s transportation needs through 2050.

Without proper planning, Georgia transportation woes are about to get worse, according to Todd Long, director of planning for the transportation department, who said in a press release that truck traffic in Georgia is growing twice as fast as general car traffic.

With the continued growth of activity at the Port of Savannah, the freight and logistics plan is given a high priority by Gov. Sonny Perdue and is to be completed within 12 months.

Ken Stewart, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, said the plan would be useful in attracting investment to the state.
